Birthday Cake, Christmas Party and Christmas Celebration!!

Well, it is that time of year! I was doing ok with not getting overloaded until this last weekend. Poor Robert, he is the one that gets the brunt of it too. I try not to freak out but it just doesn’t happen. I did get some shopping finished up this last weekend and got a lot of laundry done last night so I am feeling better. We still have gifts to wrap, groceries to buy and baking to be done.

I decided last night that Tuesday is my last day of work till after New Year’s. Robert and I are going to start the deck in our back yard this week. The plan is to get the posts in so that when my grandfather comes, all the guys will have something to work on. It will be nice to have but will also be a lot of work during a time when we wanted to rest. Grandaddy does a great job on projects like that so it will be fun for him as well.

I got to make a cake this last week. It was for my friend Jennifer’s birthday. It is marble cake with chocolate icing and butter cream “rosettes”. They didn’t really look that nice in white but that’s ok. Here is a picture.

I am going to be making poinsettia cupcakes this week as well to enjoy on Christmas Eve at church and at a family gathering.

Friday night was the company Christmas party. We went with Brian and Ann-Marie. It was fun but I think last years was better. After the party we went to Target and 2 Wal-Mart’s looking for the new Wii game system. We didn’t find anythig but it was funny seeing how dressed up we were.

Here are some pictures of us in front of the tree in the lobby. The ones of the 4 of us didn’t turn out well. Robert was talking in one and the other was blurry. I’ll post the one of Brian and Ann-Marie later. I can’t get it to go the right direction or be the correct size.
Since my Dad and Rhonda are going up to Oregon for Christmas, we celebrated early. We went to a yummy Chineese place in Alvin and then back to their house to open gifts. Robert got a bike barn gift card and I got a big jewelry box and we also got a photo keychain. Here is a picture of us eating.

I was looking on a Scrap booking website and found the following Blog prompt. Each week someone posts a new challenge. Some of the appeal to me and other’s don’t. Enjoy!

1. My current favorite song is: I can’t think of any except Christmas songs. I really like Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night and White Christmas (sung by Bing Crosby)

2. The last book I read was: He Sees You When You’re Sleeping by Mary Higgins Clark. This was my month to pick for book club so this was actually the 2nd time I read this book.

3. The last book I bought was: A book by Lolly Winston. I can’t remember the name. The author was suggested to my by a friend.

4. The last cd I bought was: We bought several when Family Christian was having a sale after Thanksgiving but I can’t remember which ones. Hopefully they will come in soon!

5. Another CD I wanted but didn’t buy is: There was a Chris Rice CD that I wanted but after I placed the order, they sold out before they could send mine.

6. Right now, I’m wearing: Khaki pants and a lavender shirt

7. The last gift I bought was: Christmas gifts for family

8. The last time I laughed heartily and loudly: Yesterday at Pee Wee Zone.

9. My favorite holiday ornament is: I have so many. I can’t choose just one.

10. My house smells like: Dog, and Christmas candle if we have it going.

11. The first thing on my to-do list tomorrow is: Wake Up

12. If I could sit on Santa’s lap and believe that he’d bring me whatever toy I wished for, I’d ask for: a house cleaning service

13. If I could holiday shop in ONE store, all expenses paid, I’d shop at: Target! They have clothes and home stuff. The only thing they are missing is cake decorating supplies.

14. If an angel alighted on my doorstep today and said, “I’m here to grant a Christmas wish,” I’d wish for:

15. When I see a bell ringer while out shopping, I: walk past. I already give to so many organizations.

Little Drummer Solo

Okay, so on the way to work today we’re listening to some of the aforementioned Christmas music when “The Little Drummer Boy” comes on. The Jars of Clay version of this is one of my favorites, but this one was a little more modern as well, played by Mercy Me. As I’m listening I think, you know what, most of the time we don’t get to hear that little drummer boy really jam. I think if you do that song you should be required to allow your drummer to have a drum solo and really just wail on it. Otherwise, you’re just using the little drummer boy for the song and not really featuring him. Maybe that’s the hard rock side of me speaking, but I just think that’s the way it should be.

Christmas Music

Yeah, its that time again, when you can’t go anywhere without hearing Christmas music blasted at you. In theory I don’t have a problem with Christmas music, I just think its abused. For instance, if you’re playing it before Thanksgiving you should be shot. There is such a thing as taking it too far, and before Thanksgiving definitely qualifies.

The other problem I have is that it seems like there are only about 10 Christmas songs and all I hear is 100 different versions. By the end of the season I’m having nightmares about jingling bells. There is only so much you can do to make a song seem new. Most of the versions are basically what I would call the “old people” versions. Slow, easy listening stuff that is just as likely to put you to sleep as it is to remind you of the season. Why aren’t more of the rock bands doing Christmas CDs. I think someone like Metallica, Guns and Roses or Megadeath could do a really stirring rendition of Silent Night.

Even if we can get more groups to do different version of the songs it still leaves the problem that there just aren’t enough songs. There should be a rule that for every CD released of Christmas music there must be at least 2 NEW songs. That would have one of two effects. Either people would stop pumping out the crappy CDs or they would start making a more complete set of songs. Either way its positive.

Of course the RIAA’s main goal now seems to be to torture and sue us all to death, so I’m sure these simple ideas will never come to fruition. I will blame it all on them. Oh well, no one ever listens to my ideas.
