The Strike of Ike

Before the evil Ike hit us we were just a happy family hanging out and putting mohawks on our baby.
Then Ike decided to head our way. We borrowed Kendra’s step dad Charlie’s Four Runner and loaded it up with stuff.
Here we are about to go, don’t we look happy? Its a lie, we didn’t want to go, and we weren’t happy about it.
At least when we got to our evacuation location, Austin, we had things to do. We stayed with Kendra’s Paw Paw, and got to visit her college friend Jocelyn and my friend Stephen. I’m sure she’ll post some pictures of some of that. Below is a great shot of Levi and I getting his college education started. The first step is knowing where to go, so we showed him around the right answer, UT Austin.
We have been talking about getting Levi a buddy to sleep with so he has a toy in bed if he wakes up. With that in mind we got him the little toy you see on his left. Its an orange tiger wearing a UT shirt. We decided to name him Ike. On his right he has Cooper, a giant Longhorn from the Co-op bookstore in Austin. It was a pretty good price. Here is Levi doing one of his new tricks with Paw Paw Jancha. He can stand up now with assistance, and he loves doing it. If he’s laying on his back you can get him to hold your hands and then pull him up. He thinks its the greatest thing ever. Below he is looking at the two kitties in their carrier before we headed home on Tuesday after the storm.
Here’s the back of the SUV loaded up most of the way.
And here’s the two missing pieces loaded up and ready to go.A side view, with cats and gear in there.
Once we got home the whole crowd was tired. Here you can see Levi taking a nap with Ike. He really missed his swing. He almost always uses it for naps, so he had a hard week without it.

Below is the path of Hurricane Ike. That little orange dot is our house.
As a result of that orange dot we had roof damage. Luckily Kendra’s parents were at our house for the storm. We would have preferred they evacuate, but they were a huge help being there. Kendra’s step dad went up on the roof with our great neighbor Shane and put tarps up for us while we were out of town. The roofer that came later to make sure we were good until the insurance adjuster came said it was great and he wouldn’t even need to adjust it.The roof damage resulted in a leak, which resulted in ceiling damage. Once again Kendra’s parents came along and saved the day. They poked a whole in the ceiling and put down tarps and trash cans to catch the water. This helped prevent it from overflowing and destroying more. They also covered my custom homemade bookshelves full of books.
Here’s a closeup of our damage. I went in the attic and couldn’t really see damage in there, but I couldn’t get over there very well because of a return air duct in the way.
Most of our fences were damaged, as you can see below. The ones that are up are still damaged and will probably have to get replaced because they are really loose. The tree is also leaning about 30 degrees off.
In the end our damage was nothing compared to so many other people. We lost some food, some fences and some roof, but we were able to come home to a safe home. Please keep all of the people who lost things in your prayers.

Ike!

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are still in Austin. We came up here on Thursday and hope to be able to head back tomorrow (Monday). My Mom ended up at our house since it is further away from the Bay. We have a pretty good amount of roof damage and all of our fences are down. Luckily they were there and heard a leak in our game room and were able to puncture the ceiling to let some water out and put a trash can under it along with a tarp and move some of our items. There is also a leak in our bathroom and bedroom. We are trying to get up with some roofing companies to see if they can put tarps on the roof to keep more water from getting in there. The roof is very steep so we can’t have family up there messing with it. If anyone knows of someway to help us get it covered, please call me at 281-910-0713. We can have my Mom meet at our house and pay if needed.

Luckily we are all safe and I am glad my Mom was at our place since she lost some major trees that could have landed on her roof. Trees and fences and roofs can be fixed!

Our trip to Austin wasn’t too bad. Took just over 6 hours and that was with stopping for Levi about 1.5 hours total. The traffic was the worst on I45. When we turned on 71 to go to Austin we saw a set up of gas trucks, portapotties and water for people who needed it. I really think ALOT of lessons were learned from Rita and it has turned out well. We are able to watch a lot of updates here and they are even rebroadcasting Houston stations here.

We have limited internet access but will try to keep everyone updated as much as possible. I know JSC is closed Monday and they will hopefully be back open later in the week. Gloria Dei is closed Monday and Tuesday and will let us know after the building is inspected about opening. Both places are close to the water.

From Toothing to Teething

Here’s Levi chewing on a pacifier sitting in his high chair with special cover. This was his first time using the cover, or a restaurant high chair for that matter. He did pretty good, but he needs something behind him or he ends up slumped in it looking like he needs a beer and a big screen in front of him.
Today at school when we went to pick him up I saw another tooth. That’s right, he is officially teething, no longer toothing. Here he is hiding his teeth so I can’t take a picture.
Here is a close up without his permission. The teeth are circled and labeled. One of them isn’t as easy to see.
And here’s a sneak preview of part of his Halloween costume. Can you guess what it is?

Life at the Sterner’s

Things have been going pretty well around here. Robert and I joined a new small group and we have really been enjoying that. It meets on Tuesday nights so my Mom and Charlie come over and watch Levi. Here is a picture of Levi and Grandaddy reading a book before bed. He loves to listen to books and chew on them as well.

Levi is really doing good at staying sitting up. Here is a picture of him playing with some of his toys.

We recently introduced the sippy cop to Levi. He is slowly getting the hang of it but right now he mainly bites on it and makes the water come out. We will keep practicing it.

So far Levi has eaten carrots, butternut squash, peas, sweet potatoes, applesauce, pears, bananas, and peaches. I still haven’t had a chance to make any food yet. If I can be healthy for a weekend that we don’t have anything planned, it might happen.

On Sundays when we go swimming, we also play the game Rock Band. Here is Levi helping Daddy sing. He does a bit of singing and a bit of eating the microphone. All in all he really enjoys himself.

My cousin Christa was in town visiting and got to meet Levi one night. They had a great time together.

This is a random picture of Levi in a cute outfit. I just love the little shorts!

A friend at work gave me tickets to an Astros game on the 28th of August so my Mom, Christa, Levi and I went. His seats are in my favorite level of Minute Maid Park. The 300’s. We had a great time and the Astros won too! I learned that I could not have gone to the game by myself with just Levi. Too much stuff involved!

As previously mentioned, I haven’t been feeling well recently. In the last 6 months I have been on antibiotics 3 times. 2 times for mastitis and 1 time for strep throat. The latest issue seems to be a cold. I am just so tired of being sick! Saturday morning I needed to rest more so I took Levi with me and we took a nap together while Robert watched a movie and worked on laundry. Robert snuck in and took this picture of us. Levi looks so cute! Thank you Robert for taking care ofme this weekend.

Saturday marked the official start of the college football season. Below is a picture of my 2 favorite guys in the whole world! We went to watch the Longhorn game at Buffalo Wild Wings since it was pay per view. We had a good time but only lasted till half time. Luckily the Horns were way ahead.
That’s all for now. We are so very blessed in all that we have. I am constantly reminded at how awesome life is.
